Item Description: | This monthly was founded by Alexander Jones and edited by Seba Smith who had earlier created the Yankee comic character, Major Jack Downing. Smith contributed a great deal of the content as did his wife, Elizabeth Oakes Smith, who wrote poetry and drama criticism. Little fiction was included, but there were many woodcuts and much humor on various subjects. Cf. American periodicals, 1741-1900. Title from caption. |
