Item Description: | Edward William Bok succeeded Mrs. Curtis in 1889 and during his thirty years as editor, the Journal continued to improve. Its keynote became intimacy; there were a number of intimate personality sketches of famous people, in addition to Ruth Ashmore's "Side Talks with Girls" and Mrs. Margaret Bottome's "Heart to Heart Talks." Around the turn of the century the Journal was publishing the writings of such famous American writers as Mark Twain, Bret Harte, Conan Doyle, Hamlin Garland, Joel Chandler Harris, and Sarah Orne Jewett, and during the first decade of the new century writings by Jane Addams, Helen Keller and Rudyard Kipling appeared. (cont) During the years following Bok's resignation in 1920, there were several editors, but Bok's policies were continued in general. New features included a department for teenage girls called "The Sub-Deb," and favorite writers included Galsworthy, Tarkington, Willa Cather, Edna Ferber and Bess Streeter Aldrich. Intimacy continued to be the Journal's trademark when a husband and wife team, Bruce and Beatrice Blackmar Gould took over the editorship in 1935. One of the most popular features was "How America Lives," a series of articles describing the lives of typical American families, and another was Gladys Taber's "Diary of Domesticity," an intimate account of a family's life. There were both fiction and nonfiction serials, including John Gunther's "Death Be Not Proud," Margaret Mead's "Male and Female, " and Pearl Buck's "The Child Who Never Grew." Cf.
