Achoimre:"Working with a transnational language (Galizan-portuguese) we have carried out an intervarietal contrast based on lexicometric methods and with the aim of getting information about cultural differences between Brazilian and Portuguese societies. Methodology is based on that used by Goeffrey Leech and Roger Fallon in their work "Computer corpora: What do they tell us about culture?", published in ICAME Journal, n. 16. There isn't any couple of parallel corpora in Galizan-portuguese made following homogeneous sampling criteria, like Brown (American English) and LOB (British English). Then, we had to reduce the contrast to newspaper language. We think that the social representativeness of newspaper discourse compensates really the generic heterogeneity of British and American corpora. In order to gather and analyse homogeneous-sized samples we developed a Visual Basic application called Pr'Além (Programa de Análise Linguística em Linha) On Line Linguistic Analysis Program that was specifically designed to this work and that is described in detail. Statistical analysis, based on chi-square and coefficient of difference formulations, allowed to elaborate six word lists where significatively differencial words between two varieties are collected. The results show a more dynamical, pragmatic and individualist Brazilian culture. Portuguese society seems to be more static, idealist and with a certain feeling of collectivity. It is also the interesting to emphasize that the results of Brasilian/Portuguese contrast are very similar to American/British one."
