Item Description: | An informative though amateurish miscellany of six years' duration which was begun <under an earlier title> in St. Louis by T. F. Risk . After Risk retired in August, 1851, his partner, Micajah Tarver, continued the magazine with the help of H. Cobb, who introduced some literary features, using translations especially, in order to vary the monotony of informative material. Chateaubriand's Atala was printed serially. The file is valuable for articles on early railroad projects and for material on the development of the upper Mississippi Valley. A few steel plates and woodcuts and several lithographs serve for illustration. Cf. American periodicals, 1741-1900. Title from masthead. Editors: 1851- , M. Tarver and H. Cobb. |
