תאור פריט:A Presbyterian weekly newspaper founded in 1832 to promote revivals, temperance and other reforms. During the Civil War period, The Evangelist was a strong anti-slavery publication. A wide variety of magazines and books are reviewed, including Atlantic Monthly and Harper's Magazine. News for farmers, scientific news, bills in Congress, foreign religious news, progress of the gospel, and occupations for women are a few of the topics included. From 1865 to 1885, the New York Evangelist spoke for the New School Presbyterians. In its later years, The Evangelist and Religious Review became a monthly magazine designed to uplift and develop a spiritual nature in its readers. It reported church activities and expressions of spiritual enlightenment. Cf. American periodicals, 1741-1900.
