Item Description:"Conducted by an Association of Gentlemen", this orthodox journal of the New England theology began as a monthly and became a quarterly in 1829. Contributors included many of the prominent clerical writers of New England. Much attention is given to the missionary activities of the Presbyterian and Congregational churches and also among its contents are theological articles, a few literary reviews, a public affairs section, religious news, listings of new publications, sermons, biographical sketches, and obituaries. The Spectator favored colonization rather than abolition as a solution to the problem of slavery. Cf. American periodicals, 1741-1900.
