Descripció de l’ítem:Founded by Roswell Smith in 1873, St. Nicholas was a monthly magazine for children. Its editor, Mrs. Mary Mapes Dodge, was convinced that it should not "be a milk-and-water variety of the periodicals for adults." A handsome magazine from the first, St. Nicholas was beautifully printed and copiously illustrated by artists and wood engravers. St. Nicholas was distinguished by the high quality of its fiction. All of the leading writers for children appeared among its contributors including Trowbridge, Louisa Alcott, Kipling, Harte, Clemens, Stevenson, and numerous others. As St. Nicholas entered the twentieth century it showed a certain flagging in vitality and a slow but steady decline in circulation. The magazine became more departmentalized and placed less emphasis on stories and articles. In 1905, Mrs. Dodge died and was succeeded as editor by William Clarke. Cf.
