500 |a On film: Vol. 1, no. 1-2 are intended to be the first two numbers of the American journal of education, edited by Henry Barnard. See the note explaining the discrepancy in the publication dates between the American journal of education and college review, and the American journal of education.
500 |a Edited by Henry Barnard, the American Journal of Education became the leader of the numerous educational journals appearing prior to the War. The storehouse of information contained in this periodical overwhelms the reader with its completeness. The history of education in the United States was covered extensively, including the appearance of biographies. A running account of the progress of education (college, normal, and criminal), architectural design, translations from foreign educational journals, physical education, the education of women, and proceedings of educational societies were all included in the scope of this journal. Because of the lack of popular appeal, and perhaps because of being poorly printed, the journal was in serious financial difficulty much of the time. More than once it required personal sacrifices by the editor or monetary assistance from its supporters to assure publication. Cf. American periodicals, 1741-1900.
