Item Description: | The Baptist Missionary Magazine was the chief representative in the field of missions, ministering to the immense interest of the time in missionary activity, and for many years was the only Baptist periodical work in America. Missionary articles, chiefly about missions in India, were especially prominent and there was also some coverage of home missions in the West. Besides the pages which marked it as an official organ, there was a variety of religious reading: church records and proceedings, memoirs, obituaries, news, reviews of sermons and other religious literature, accounts of revivals, and some poetry and selected miscellany. It printed many articles about foreign lands, all of which lent themselves well to illustration. The new series had a few rude woodcuts in its earliest numbers, and woodcuts reappeared in the 70's. Half-tone illustrations increased after 1890. Cf. American periodicals, 1741-1900. Title from caption. |
