| 500 | |a One of the most successful of the Virginia farm papers was the Southern Planter of Richmond, which was established in 1841, but was suspended between 1862 and 1867 because of the war. This monthly was devoted mainly to agriculture, horticulture, and the household arts. Its first editor, C. T. Botts, was succeeded by several others during the magazine's long lifetime. At first it mainly published extracts from both foreign and domestic agricultural publications, along with news concerning the south, but later expanded its contents to include a greater variety of material. It presented information on fertilizers and soil improvement, on crops, such as tobacco and cotton, and on diseases of crops and animals, along with an outline of "Work for the Month." A "Home" department contained household hints, features, and poetry, while other departments were concerned with granges, livestock and the dairy, the garden and orchard, poultry, and horses. In addition, the Southern Planter published economic news, prices, news of agricultural societies, a section of ads, occasional fiction, and magazine reviews. Cf.
