Item Description:After the Panoplist was converted into a missionary organ in 1821, orthodox Congregationalism was without a controversial magazine until some of the leaders of Calvinistic theology in Boston got together in 1827 and determined to issue a magazine to war against Unitarianism. Thus the Spirit of the Pilgrims, a magazine of religious controversy, was created in 1828. In addition to much controversial material, it contained a serial history of Unitarianism, and other serials on various religious topics. Cf. American periodicals, 1741-1900.
