500 | |a Francis F. Browne established the Dial in Chicago in 1880, serving as editor until his death in 1913. Consistently conservative in its literary criticism, the Dial left European literature virtually untouched, but managed to give a good deal of attention to the British writers. Joseph Kirkland, William M. Payne, and many others contributed reviews. Waldo R. Browne assumed editorship after his father. During a reorganization in 1916, the responsibility passed to Clinton J. Massock. Under his editorship, the Dial little resembled the former volumes. The liberal minded editor included foreign literature and gave special attention to public issues. World reconstruction became a cause.
500 | |a (Cont'd.) Three years later, Scofield Taylor purchased the Dial. The contents, again overhauled, resembled a magazine of arts and letters penned by scores of modernistic authors. The magazine failed to gain a wide circulation and publication ceased with the July 1929 issue. Cf. American periodicals, 1741-1900.
