Description
Item Description:Title from incipit.
Place of printing and printer's name from colophon; date of printing from filmer's introductory frame on fiche 1.
Translated by Heinrich Steinhöwel.
Illustrations: 81 woodcuts (including two repeats) in text; one large ornamental woodcut initial S; foliated initals. The cuts by an unknown artist are uniform in size and within a two-line border except those for chap. 1, 2, 4; the names are in semi-gothic letters on the cuts and in the borders of some, and in Roman capitals on others. The cut for chap. 27 is dated 1473. The large initial S, extending the length of the margin of sig. ??? represents Adam and Eve in the Garden, and is considered one of the best printer's ornaments ever made. William Morris stated he considered this book a work of art, both as a book and also for the pictures themselves. cf. Bibliographics, 1895, I, p. 437-454; cf. also Fairfax Murray 76; and authorities on German woodcuts.
