500 |a Founded as a semi-monthly by J. W. and W. S. Jones in Augusta in 1843 under the earlier title, the Southern Cultivator, the Southern Cultivator and Dixie Farmer was "devoted to southern agriculture, designed to improve the mind and elevate the character of the tillers of the soil, and to introduce a more enlightened system of culture." It moved to Athens after the war, and then to Atlanta, changing its frequency of issue, absorbing a number of other farm journals, and adding the title of one of them, the Dixie Farmer, to its own in 1886. A typical 32-page issue of the Southern Cultivator and Dixie Farmer in the early 1900's consisted of articles on crops, such as cotton, peanuts, and silk, and on planting, fertilizers, labor problems, and blacks, with sections on "The Dairy," "Poultry," and "Gardening and Live Stock." "The Farm Home" offered hints for the sick room, recipes, and advice on canning. In addition, there were occasional fashion items, letters from readers, Atlanta market reports, and several pages of advertising. Cf. American periodicals, 1741-1900.
