Disgrifiad o'r Eitem:The western literary magazines were begun for the most part to bring gracious living into the harsh environment, and Wellman's Miscellany was one of the first of these to be successful. Its stated purpose was "to furnish in a cheap form a literature calculated to develop the mind, and advance it in knowledge and virtue." Because there was little or no advertising, the magazine depended on the sale of subscriptions, and in almost every issue, the publishers pleaded for their money from subscribers who had neglected to pay.
