| 500 | |a For the first few years it was devoted exclusively to agriculture, horticulture, and the household, but in 1853 an education section was added. Contents included articles on caring for livestock and crops, and illustrated articles on farm machinery. Particular attention was given to Michigan farmers and to state fairs; and the "Rambles" series described various cities and towns in Michigan. The Michigan Farmer of the 1880's was an eight-page weekly containing sections on agriculture and horticulture, a veterinary department, and a "household" department, as well as news summaries, pictures of prize-winning stock, poetry, and many ads. Later it was expanded to about 20 pages per issue, and added building plans for houses and farm buildings, grange news, and a "Magazine Section" containing stories for children, a women's department, stock prices, and ads.
