The main purpose of this scientific magazine was to expand the public's knowledge of American geology and archaeology, about which relatively little was published at that time, and to keep readers abreast of the latest scientific developments. It also provided information on the state of natural science in Europe and included articles on the structure of Indian languages, critical reviews of recent scientific works, and illustrations. Cf.
