Description
Summary:"This thesis studies the religious art of the Order of the Order of Santiago in Galicia during the Middle Ages. To this end it first of all analyzes the origin and organization of the aforementioned militia, paying special attention to its presence in this kingdom and using medieval documentation kept in Madrid's National Historical Archives as the main basis. The study examines in detail both the historical and artistic aspects of Galician monasteries, namely those of Santa Maŕa de Codesedo and San Munio de Veiga, in the province of Ourense, and that of San Salvador de Vilar de Donas, in the province of Lugo. We investigate the foundation of these monastic centres, their donation to the Order of Santiago in the last quarter of the 12 th century and their subsequent historical development during the Middle Ages. We also analyze their monastic buildings, their churches (built between 1200 and 1230) and their liturgical furnishings, reconstructing their situation at the end of the Middle Ages and analyzing all surviving medieval works, among which the following stand out: the romanesque cross of San Munio (from the beginning of the 13 th century), the important funeral complexes of Veiga and Vilar de Donas and the extremely interesting mural paintings of the latter church's high chapel, dated 1434."
