Description
Summary:Vols. for 1828-1934 contain the Proceedings at large of the American Board of Commissioners for Foreign Missions.
Published:Vol. 17, no. 1 (Jan. 1821)-[v. 130, no. 3] (Mar. 1934)
Item Description:Founded in 1805 by Rev. Jedediah Morse to repudiate the new doctrines of Unitarianism, the Panoplist made doctrinal propaganda its chief business, and essays and sermons on theological principles were staple fare. It also published reviews of both religious and secular works, biography, and religious poetry. After the Massachusetts Missionary Magazine was merged with it in 1808, information and news of missionary activity increased greatly, and in 1821 it was converted to a missionary organ and renamed the Missionary Herald. Edited by Jeremiah Evarts, who had succeeded Morse as editor of the Panoplist in 1810, it became an important Congregationalist missionary monthly, surviving until 1951. Cf. American periodicals, 1741-1900.
