| Descripció de l’ítem: | Relief cut at head. Two columns of verse within heavy borders. First line: "Awake my muse, and strike the mournful lyre." Dated at end: "East-Hampton, ex meo musaeo, March 1st, 1768." Samuel Buell, minister of the church in East Hampton, N.Y., is attributed as the author of Evans 11591, a similarly titled elegiac poem which was printed by Timothy Green in New London, Conn., and which also ends with the phrase, "East-Hampton, ex meo musaeo ...". Because the Hedges family was prominent in East Hampton, this broadside was also presumably written by Buell and printed in New London. Another issue, owned by the New York Historical Society, has slight typographical variations and a different relief cut at head. Master microform held by: Readex. |
