Item Description: | Established to "aid the cause of religion and morality," the Religious Monitor was devoted to the principles of the reformation as set forth in the "formularies of the Westminster divines and of the churches of Holland." Later volumes, however, were edited by a minister of the Associated Presbyterian Church. A great deal of the material was from European magazines and included explanations of difficult Scripture passages, biographical sketches, religious anecdotes, and excerpts from sermons and speeches. In later issues long essays on marriage, Christian education of children, temperance, the dangers of novel reading and warnings against Popery and Masons often filled most of an entire issue. Some poetry was published Cf. American periodicals, 1800-1850. Title from caption. |
