Galle, and one each by Theodorus Galle and Adrian Collaert. Publisher's name (probably Philippe Galle) on the 6 plates of Vermis sericus crudely scratched out.

545 | |a First published in 1578 as a series of 44 plates, subsequent printings are described as "a still untangled mystery of numerous editions and renditions with constant changes in the numbers and sequence of engravings ..." by Manfred Selink and Marjolien Leesberg in Philips Galle (2001). Selink and Leesberg note that it was the second edition that first contained an additional 61 plates by A. Collaert, J. Collaert, C. Galle, and I. & C. de Mallery; its first state numbered the plates 1-104. A variant of the illustrated t.p. of the first work (Venationes) had an armorial crest in an oval frame, dedication and printer statement: "Generoso, prudenti, ac consultissimo viro, D. Henrico ab Osthoorn et Sonnevelt, I.V. licentiato, cognato suo, Philippus Gallaeus amoris ergo libens merito D.D." In this 19th-century re-strike, the oval frame is blank.
545 | |a Dictionary of art (1996, v. 29, p. 741) states the plates originated as two series of cartoons for tapestries that were engraved by Philip Galle and others and first printed in 1578. Later, they were combined into a single series of 104 plates and printed ca. 1596. Other sources state that the first recorded issue of Venationes was dated 1578 and published in Antwerp by Philip Galle with 104 plates but in the 17th century the plates were replaced, reorganized and renumbered for a total suite of 102.
545 | |a Although born in Bruges, Jan van der Straat or Stradanus, as he became known, worked principally in Italy as a designer of cartoons for tapestries. From 1553 to 1571 he was employed by Cosimo de Medici, who commissioned him to make a series of lavish representations of hunting, fowling and fishing for the adornment of twenty rooms in the Palace of Peggio-a-Cajano. The designs in the Venationes blend Renaissance hunting methods with subject matter drawn from Persia, India and the East.
