Item Description: | An English reimpression, probably printed in the 19th-century, of two early 17th-century works by Straet, Venationes and Vermis, from the original plates. Hand-colored engraved plates; printed on wove paper. Engraved, illustrated t.p. Title in Dutch at foot of t.p. Drawings by Ioan. Stradanus, printed by Ioan. Galle (excud.); engraved mostly by Ioan. Collaert (sculp.), some by Carol. de Mallery and Corn. Galle, and one each by Theodorus Galle and Adrian Collaert. Publisher's name (probably Philippe Galle) on the 6 plates of Vermis sericus crudely scratched out. All plates are numbered in the lower left corner, except for plates 84-86, numbered in the lower right corner. Includes several depictions of animal cruelty, such as elephants with their trunks cut off. |
