Item Description: | Edited until his death in 1837 by the brilliant Thomas Green Fessenden, the New England Farmer and Horticultural Register was one of the most interesting and long-lived of the early agricultural journals, surviving until 1913. Fessenden made a good editor, attracting the contributions of leading farmers. He printed some of his own "Moral Lessons in Rhyme" and other pieces; he kept a poetry corner, and spiced his columns with jokes and anecdotes. Agricultural societies furnished their reports and proceedings and there were regular news summaries and produce market reports. Among the more famous contributors were Daniel Webster, Timothy Pickering, and John Lowell. Fessenden was succeeded by a number of editors, and in later years, stories, grange news, more and bigger ads, and a women's column were added, but the contents remained essentially the same as when Fessenden was editor.
