545 |a The NSDAP archive was set up primarily as a depository for source materials on which historians in the future would draw to write the history of the Nazi party. It was to be the main depository for documents related to the party's history, from its earliest days, but had difficulty in finding original material. The archivists appealed for donations from old party members for records from 1919 to 1933, although they collected materials back to 1890 on the ideological forerunners of National Socialism. Material for the years 1933-1945 is spotty; it covers the Reichsparteitage (1923-1939) in full organizational detail. The archive acquired the files of the Munich police and Bavarian Ministry of the Interior covering the origins of the party as well as political opponents. The archive was the depository for Hitler's documents but not other high-ranking Nazi officials.
